A series of meetings about the proposed City of Briarcliff will be held starting Oct. 9.
A postcard sent to residents in the Scottdale community said the meetings will be held at Your DeKalb Farmers Market at 3000 East Ponce de Leon Ave. in Decatur on Oct. 9 from 7 to 9 p.m.; Oct. 11 from 3 to 5 p.m.; Oct. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Oct. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. Representatives from the Briarlciff movement are slated to attend, as well as unnamed State Representatives.
While the mailer says residents have a choice of joining City Briarcliff, Avondale Estates, Decatur or City of South DeKalb, it prominently lists the benefits of joining Briarcliff, including a lower tax base, local zoning control, greater police presence and an accountable government.
Interestingly, the postcard mentions nothing about Briarcliff and the the LakesideYES! movement having joined forces earlier this year after failing to move either of their respective cityhood initiatives through the Legislature.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet from William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. The reference is often used to imply that the names of things do not affect what they really are. Please select another name. I do not like the name “Greenhaven”.
The process of picking the name was not inclusive and not very democratic. The name or process of picking the name does not represent to me creativity, inspiration or productivity in which the CCCSD say they represent. Come on man, the name “Greenhaven” for a new city is not a good logo for any future sports teams or marketing name. If we are going to be the Mecca of the South then the name has to be on point.
The name “Greenhaven” is not a good name it sounds like a church, or rest home, or funeral home. The name sounds like a country town; it might have selected the name Green Acres, just like the TV show from the sixties and early seventies. There is a city called West Green, Georgia, Greenwood South Carolina, Greenwood Mississippi, and Greensboro North Carolina. I do not want to live in either one of these cities. This was an opportunity for the organization to show and demonstrate some creativity and talent and leadership and it failed.
The effort lead by the CCCSD does not seem to be supported by the business community. I do not believe that the name “Greenhaven” will transform the community and provide sustainability and abundance. The name has no historical and no link to a vision of the future of the commonality of the various communities.
I would like to be overjoyed by this cityhood effort but I cannot at this time and moment. The citizens should have some other options and I do not see where there are any alternatives. I believe that the County leadership should file a court in junction until the tax and pension implications can be better understood. There is something definitely unfair and unconstitutional with the tax and property issues.
