The former site of a parking deck on Capitol Avenue across from the Gold Dome is now an outdoor civic space for public gatherings and assemblies. Gov. Nathan Deal dedicated Liberty Plaza during a lunchtime ceremony.
Designed by architectural firm Stevens & Wilkinson, Liberty Plaza can hold up to 3,400 people “for large and small groups holding public rallies and assemblages both during and between legislative sessions,” according to details released to the media. The plaza was also built with security in mind so that gates and fencing can be easily erected and will be under continuous camera surveillance.
The design team included installations of relocated public art in the plaza, which also features Georgia-harvested granite and a native plant palette.
During a ceremony inside the Capitol to mark the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, Gov. Deal pledged that a statue of of the civil rights leader be built overlooking Liberty Plaza.
