The Golf Coaches Association of America has named Oglethorpe University golfer Anthony Maccaglia the 2015 Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year for collegiate Division III, according to his coach, Jim Owen.
Maccaglia becomes the second Oglethorpe golfer to claim the honor. Trent Erb won the award in 2004, Owen said in an email.
Maccaglia will join his four fellow Jack Nicklaus Award winners this weekend at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio,to receive the awards from Nicklaus himself and to play for a spot in a PGA Tour event.
Maccaglia, of Tampa, Fla., is one of the most decorated student-athletes in Oglethorpe history, Owen said. Maccaglia led the golf team to four consecutive trips to the NCAA Division III Championship, including winning an individual and team national title in his freshman season, his coach said.
