The Rough Draft team will be covering today’s midterm elections as well as providing results tonight through our partnership with the Associated Press and via the Secretary of State’s tabulation of votes. Be sure to bookmark this post and check back often for updates.
Polls will be open across Georgia from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. With a record-breaking 2.8 million early votes, lines at polling places could be short, but it remains to be seen just how many will cast their votes in person on Election Day.
Some election officials are concerned about interference by the Trump administration, which is sending Department of Justice observers to polling places across the country, including Georgia.
Fulton County Board of Elections Chair Sherri Allen said federal watchdogs did not concern her.
“Public observation of elections has always been around,” Allen said. “And am I concerned about it? No. We are coordinating and have coordinated across the region, across federally as well. If there is anything that we need to be concerned about, we are prepared to address right away.”
Georgia’s election will be one of the most watched in the country as Democratic former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms squares off against Republican billionaire businessman Rick Jackson for governor. The two remain in a statistical dead heat going into today’s election.
The other race drawing national attention is incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff’s race against Republican Mike Collins, one of the most heated races in recent memory. Democrats are hoping to take back power in both the U.S. House and Senate to check President Donald Trump’s agenda for his final two years in office.
