Gov. Nathan Deal flipped and flopped on Tuesday before finally deciding he would seek a redesign of the state-issued license plate that features an image of the Confederate battle flag. According to 11Alive, Deal said he would work with the Sons of Confederate Veterans to redesign the plate, which added the large flag to its design in 2014. The emblem has long been a divisive issue in the South because of its association with slavery and racism. Georgia removed the battle flag cross from the state flag in 2003. There has been a growing movement to remove the Confederate battle flag image from government properties around the South in the wake of the mass shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church.
Florida’s Escambia County has threatened to seize and sell Downtown’s SkyView Ferris Wheel if the operators don’t pay off taxes owed before the attraction was moved from Pensacola Beach two years ago. According to the AJC, the operators said they would pay off the taxes, but dispute the amount owed. Escambia County claims it is owed more than $350,000 in property taxes and penalties.
The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved rezoning requests Tuesday for Phase II of the Decatur Crossing development, according to a report at Decaturish. Demolition of the former Scott Boulevard Baptist Church is underway to make room for a mixed-use development featuring 450 apartments and 80,000 square feet of retail space and 15,000 square feet of office space.
