AIvwueRfTMkhCal-800x450-noPadA petition to save the historic Bell Building in Downtown Atlanta already has 1,000 signatures as of Friday afternoon. The petition began after a report in Creative Loafing that Georgia State University plans to demolish the former Southern Bell telephone exchange building constructed between 1907 and 1922 to make room for a parking lot. Atlanta’s first dial tone originated from the building.

The Atlanta Preservation Center, which has the structure on its list of city’s most endangered buildings, said the Bell Building at 25-27 Auburn Ave. is ripe for renovation and redevelopment and could become homes, offices or retail space.
