Mayor Kasim Reed has appointed Dan Gordon as Chief Operating Officer of the City of Atlanta, a position that encompasses oversight and executive management for the city’s operating departments including Aviation, Fire, Police, Corrections, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Planning and Community Development, Public Works, and Watershed Management. Gordon brings over 15 years of management experience to the position and currently serves as a senior operating executive at The Home Service Store. Prior to joining the city, Gordon held several senior operating positions including serving as an executive at The Arthur M. Blank Family of Businesses. The Atlanta City Council must confirm Gordon before his appointment is final.
The Atlanta Streetcar announced today that Keith Jones has been named Interim Executive Director. Jones comes to Atlanta from the URS Corporation, formerly United Research Services, and has previously served as the CEO and general manager of the Central Arkansas Transit Authority. Jones will serve on an interim basis while a national search is conducted for a permanent replacement. In addition, Ozell Hayes has been named Interim Director of Safety, Security and Training. Hayes previously served as the Safety Manager for the Department of Aviation for the city.
The MARTA Police Department is enacting its annual simulated full-scale training exercise on Sept. 13 at the MARTA Airport Station. Operation Destination Disaster is designed to evaluate emergency response capabilities in the event of an actual threat to the system. The exercise will run from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. at the MARTA Airport Station at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Train service to the airport will be temporarily discontinued at the end of the Sept. 12 operating day and a bus bridge will transport riders to the College Park Station. Regular rail service will resume around 5:50 a.m.
