Bobby Jones Golf Course and teardowns in Atlanta’s historic neighborhoods top The Georgia Trust’s 2016 Places in Peril list.
The Trust says significant numbers of foreclosures, vacancies and reduced property values following the 2008 housing market crash, have left historic homes in peril of being torn down. From The Trust release: “With a rebounding housing market and a renewed desire by many to relocate to intown Atlanta, traditional, single-family homes in historic neighborhoods are routinely purchased by speculative developers and demolished to make way for new construction – often without regard to the traditional size, scale or architectural designs of existing neighborhood.”
The embattled Bobby Jones Golf Course in Buckhead is second on the list as plans move forward to redesign the historic course from 18 holes to nine. Completed in 1933 to honor the golf legend, The Trust says the course’s club house is also under threat of being demolished.
