The 55-story Bank of America Plaza building (the 10th tallest building in America, according to Wikipedia) has been sold to San Francisco-based Shorenstein Properties. Completed in 1992, the skyscraper has had trouble finding and keeping tenants and was famously foreclosed upon during the economic recession, according to the AJC. It now sits half-empty. The new owners plan to make improvements to the tower’s lobby and amenities, among other upgrades.
Architect John Portman was on hand for the ribbon cutting for the the 206-room Hotel Indigo, which has opened in the Peachtree Center tower he designed back in 1965. Portman bought back the Downtown tower, which is also home to Portman’s newly-opened restaurant, JP Atlanta. Curbed Atlanta has some more details and photos.
Macy’s will close 36 of its department stores around the country, including the location at North DeKalb Mall near Decatur. The liquidation sale has already begun, so head over there for one last look around before they officially close in the spring. Locations at Lenox Square, Northlake Mall, Perimeter Mall and Cumberland Mall will remain open.
