Curbed Atlanta reports that the Disco Kroger shopping center in Buckhead might be headed for the wrecking ball to make way for a new mixed-use development. Formally known as Piedmont Peachtree Crossing shopping center, the Kroger supermarket got its nickname because of its location next door to the long-gone Limelight disco. Now, Equity One Properties wants to build “a new urban oasis” with homes, retail and offices. Renderings of the project show a Kroger on the main level.
Mayor Kasim Reed delivered his annual State of the City address to Atlanta’s business, civic, faith and non-profit leaders today at the Georgia World Congress Center. He highlighted strong business relocation and job creation numbers, as well as milestones such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport becoming the first airport in the world to serve more than 100 million passengers in one year. In 2015, 13 businesses chose to relocate their headquarters or make significant corporate expansions in the City of Atlanta. Invest Atlanta, the City’s development agency, created more than 10,000 new jobs within the city limits. Reed touted his sixth consecutive balanced budget with no property tax increases, earned seven consecutive credit rating increases and secured $150 million in cash reserves. Additionally, the city reached a peak of $2.9 billion in new building and construction permits, the highest in city history. Reed also touted last week’s negotiated deal with Atlanta Public Schools on the city’s payment of deferred taxes from the Atlanta BeltLine and said he would urge the city council to turn over 10 additional pieces of property to the school system. The mayor’s remarks are at this link.
