News Briefs: No guns missing; library demolition; Masquerade move

An anonymous tip led to an investigation involving guns stolen from the newly-formed Atlanta Public Schools police force. However, APS has said no guns are missing, according to a report at CBS46. A tip was called in to the school system’s ethics hotline that it was overheard 30 guns were stolen from the trunk of a district vehicle. The Office of Employee Relations investigated and found no guns are missing. Ninety guns were recently purchased, but all the guns were accounted for.

Creative Loafing reports that at the end of Monday’s marathon, 8-hour Atlanta City Council meeting, Councilmember C.T. Martin introduced legislation that essentially endorses the demolition of the Central Branch of the Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library in Downtown in order to construct a new building. The council passed the measure 9-3. The fate of the Marcel Breuer-designed building at 1 Margaret Mitchell Square remains uncertain as the library system’s board of trustees debates whether to issue bonds to fund the construction of a new facility or renovate the existing building and boost programming.

Curbed Atlanta is reporting that music venue The Masquerade has located a new home on the westside in warehouse building in the 1400 block of Fairmont Avenue, just north of Huff Road. Randy E. Pimsler, a Pimsler Hoss Architects principal, said his firm is designing a renovation of the warehouse space and that the Masquerade now plans to join other tenants there. The Masquerade has called the old Excelsior Mill on North Avenue in the Old Fourth Ward home since 1989. The mill is being transformed into a mixed-use apartment and restaurant development.
