Georgia State Patrol and the Atlanta Police Department are investigating whether it was a double suicide or murder-suicide after two people were found shot along I-85 this morning.

According to APD, a Hero Unit responded to a call of two persons shot inside of a vehicle on I-85 northbound near Cleveland Avenue around 9:15 a.m. The Hero Unit stopped to check on the vehicle parked in the emergency lane and contacted Georgia State Patrol. The Hero Unit approached the vehicle and saw two persons who appeared to be injured and also saw a weapon initially in the female victim’s hand. The Hero Unit backed away and then saw the male victim shoot himself in the head.

APD Zone 3 Units and Homicide responded to the scene along with Georgia State Patrol. The male victim died on scene and the female victim was transported to Grady Hospital. There names have not been released.

The incident caused major traffic delays along I-85 heading into the city, with all but one lane closed until after 1:30 p.m.
