Police-sirens-and-lightsThe Atlanta Police Department is exploring “all of its legal options” related to a false news story currently posted on a fake news site and being circulated by social media.

The story – which alleges that an Atlanta police officer shot and killed a woman breastfeeding her child while waiting for a bus on Marietta Street –  is “patently false and irresponsible,” according to a statement released by APD.

The false story has been in circulation for years, with the city and details being altered as it’s republished. The website SNOPES, which debunks fake stories, has documented it to be false as well.

The APD statement continues: “With recent incidents involving police officers around the country, it is deeply disturbing that this website would publish inflammatory, reckless and insensitive content. This manufactured story in no way represents the City of Atlanta or the honorable men and women who serve its citizens. The City is currently examining all of its legal options related to this defamatory story.”
