Georgia homeowners who owe more on their mortgage than their homes are worth now have a new opportunity to receive help, thanks to a state initiative launching today. Underwater Georgia is a limited-time, federally funded program to help Georgians through a one-time principal reduction. The initiative is administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) as part of DCA’s HomeSafe Georgia program. For eligible applicants, Underwater Georgia may be able to provide a one-time payment of up to $50,000 to the homeowner’s mortgage lender to reduce the principal balance on the home. Preliminary applications will be accepted online at underwatergeorgia.org from Sept. 28 through Oct. 18. There are no costs or fees to apply for principal reduction.
