A panel discussion is set for Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m. at Cross Keys High School in Brookhaven to discuss the assets and challenges facing the communities of Buford Highway.

Those on the panel include state Rep. Scott Holcomb (D-Atlanta), Doraville City Councilmember Dawn O’Connor, Cross Keys High School Principal Jason Heard, and Pastor David Park of Open Table Community Church in Brookhaven.

The discussion is sponsored by Cross Keys High School, the BuHi Project, Communities in School and the Cross Keys Foundation.

Topics will include affordable housing, immigration policy, community/police relations and education.

Voter registration will be provided by the Center for Pan-Asian Community Services (CPACS). Spanish translation will also be provided.

The topic of affordable housing in Brookhaven, particularly along Buford Highway, is becoming a growing concern for city leaders. Last month, the city formed its first Affordable Housing Task Force after faith leaders urged the City Council to pay attention to the need as the city ushers in rapid development.

Pulte Homes, one of the larges home builders in the country, is also seeking to purchase two Buford Highway apartment complexes to tear them down to build single family homes and townhouses.
