Thousands of Atlantans woke up to a third day with no power as clean-up after Tropical Storm Irma continues. As of 9 a.m. this morning, nearly 100,000 Georgia Power customers in Fulton and DeKalb still don’t have electricity. Many of those outages persist in Midtown, Druid Hills, Decatur and Kirkwood. Many neighborhood streets remained blocked by fallen trees and other debris from Irma, which blew into the city Monday afternoon. The interstates through Atlanta were also busy as evacuee from South Georgia and Florida began their trek home after Hurricane Irma slammed the state over the weekend.
Atlanta area schools will remained closed for a third day, but local colleges and universities – including Georgia State and Georgia Tech – resumed classes on Wednesday.
On the Eastside Trail of the Atlanta BeltLine in the Old Fourth Ward, people were out walking dogs and jogging again as a small sign of normalcy returned. But evidence of the storm wasn’t hard to miss: the sound of chainsaws wafted over the trail, which was still littered with leaves and small debris.
At beloved Poncey-Highland watering hole Manuel’s Tavern on Tuesday night, the dining room and bar area were full of people – many seeking hot food and to charge their phones after being in the dark since Monday.
