Italian jazz singer Roberta Setzu will debut her new album “Anteprima” at Red Light Cafe on Friday, on Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. as part of the Atlanta International Jazz Series.
Setzu grew up in Sardinia, where she was inspired by her mother’s singing in a traditional classical chorus and traditional Sardinian music and its influences from North Africa and flamenco. She wanted to be a classical singer, but decided to study jazz instead because “you can be in the moment and completely free.”
She studied music at Cagliari University, where she participated in seminars with international jazz greats including Maria Pia Devito, Paolo Fresu and Garrison Fewell. Her next stops were New York and LA and she is now happy to live and work in Atlanta. Setzu says that singing jazz is like “having a wire from the earth to the sky and trusting that the essence of your truth will come out in your music.”
Setzu just completed her first album “Anteprima,” which she co-produced with one of Atlanta’s premier jazz pianists, Kevin Bales, who also co-wrote songs with her. They are joined by two of Atlanta’s best – bassmen Neil Starkey and Billy Thornton. Performing with her will be Bill Heart, Craig Shaw and Yaku.
