An open house will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30 to inform the public about plans to replace the stone building at the Abernathy Arts Center on Johnson Ferry Road.
The existing art building needs significant repairs and upgrades, according to a website post from the city.
“The public will have the opportunity to learn more about the unsafe and unstable condition of the stone arts building and the proposed state-of-the-art replacement facility that will add art programming spaces to the site,” the city’s website post said.
The public open house will be held at Sandy Springs City Hall in the Studio Theatre at 1 Galambos Way.
Fulton County offered the city the Abernathy Arts Center and its 3.59-acre property. In 2021, the Sandy Springs Public Facilities Authority approved its transfer from Fulton County as part of a quit claim deed. Local residents were divided on how the property should be used at the time.
Through an agreement with Art Sandy Springs (ArtSS) in 2022, arts programming resumed at the Abernathy Arts Center. ArtSS recently completed its first year of arts programming at the site.
The 3.59-acre property includes three buildings: a single-story, former residential structure on a partial basement that is about 4,722 sq ft., a garage with a studio above, and a single-story steel framed 5,000 square foot Annex Building. The site also has tennis courts, a small playground, and a parking lot.
