Sandy Springs will ask the community to offer feedback and suggestions on ways to reduce traffic congestion at the Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Lake Hearn Drive intersection at a Feb. 28 open house.

The session will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Palisades Office Park Building D, Conference Room D, at 5909 Peachtree Dunwoody Road in Sandy Springs.

According to the city, vehicles trying to turn onto Peachtree Dunwoody Road from Lake Hearn Drive are causing significant traffic congestion, which impacts emergency vehicle access between Northside and St. Joseph’s hospitals and I-285.

Lake Hearn Drive and Peachtree Dunwoody Road also lack bicycle lanes. The city’s proposals will reduce congestion and promote pedestrian, bicycle, and MARTA transit, the city announcement said.

Funding for the project comes from the Federal Transit Authority with local matching funds from the Perimeter Community Improvement District.

In March 2023 Sandy Springs City Council awarded a $911,960 contract to Lowe Engineers for design services for the Peachtree Dunwoody and Lake Hearn Connectivity Improvements project.

Almost a year earlier in May 2022, the Perimeter CID announced it would provide $960,000 in funds for intersection improvements at Peachtree Dunwoody Road at Lake Hearn Drive, with the construction of a multi-use trail on the west side of Peachtree Dunwoody from I-285 to Hammond Drive.

At the time, Pat Chesser, a member of the Fulton-PCID board of directors, said the balance of the project, $3.6 million, would be funded by the Federal Transportation Administration.
