One of the three Atlanta Police officers wounded on a call yesterday has gone home, while two others remain at Grady Hospital following surgeries.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said Saturday that one of the officers had a shoulder wound, another a leg wound, and the third a graze wound. The office with the graze has already been released from Grady.
The three officers responded to a call of shots fired in the Capitol View neighborhood on Saturday evening, May 11, and were shot by an armed perpetrator.
The incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. when the APD officers responded to 1430 Desoto Ave. SW to a report of a man firing a gun and carrying a knife.
Schierbaum said during a press conference outside Grady Hospital that there was a struggle between the subject and the officers, which resulted in three officers being wounded and the subject being shot and killed by officers.
Police patrol cars rushed the wounded to Grady Hospital where two of the officers were being taken into surgery.
“I am devastated that we are at this place again where senseless gun violence has injured three of our APD officers. My thoughts are with these officers and their families, and we are cooperating fully with this ongoing investigation,” Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement after the event. “Thanks to the surgeons and staff at Grady Hospital for ensuring that our officers will survive.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the officer-involved shooting of the perpetrator, whose name has not been released.
