The City of Sandy Springs will continue its collaboration with Sandy Springs Youth Sports to manage the Morgan Falls Athletic Complex and provide recreational programs for youths.
Sandy Springs Youth Sports has conducted youth athletic programs at the complex at450 Morgan Falls Place since 2008, Recreation Director Brant Walker said. The latest facility use agreement expired on June 30, so the Sandy Springs City Council approved a new agreement during its July 16 meeting.
The new annual contract for maintenance and upkeep at Morgan Falls increased by $10,000 to $160,000 per year. It includes a 5 percent increase for each contractual year to account for increased service costs. The contract is for one year with four optional renewal years. Another $25,000 was added to the contract to provide funds for scholarships for program participants.
Colan Wheat, president of the Sandy Springs Youth Sports board, said the scholarship funds could support up to 50 children, depending on how many sports each child plays. He said this is a record year for scholarships, increasing from 10 scholarships five years ago to 20 to 25 this year. He believes that number is just going to increase.
“I would tell you to date, we’ve never turned one person away. And I think it’s important to say for many years, we funded it ourselves,” Wheat said.
The organization also has equipment the youth can use without having to buy it, he said.
Sandy Springs FD getting new cardiac monitors
Sandy Springs Fire Chief Keith Sanders asked the city council to lease 10 new cardiac monitors for $643,018 to replace existing models that have gone out of warranty.
Sanders said leasing from Stryker Sales also includes a service maintenance contract. The new monitors give better connectivity to hospitals in real time and shares patients’ cardiac information to ER physicians.
Like the units they are replacing, the new cardiac monitors will be installed on the fire department’s trucks.
Sandy Springs honored for GIS, inspection app
Sandy Springs announced it received a Special Achievement in GIS [Graphic Information System] Award at the 2024 Esri User Conference in San Diego on July 17, the only Georgia city to win the award.
The city was recognized for its work to create 3D development scenarios and an app utilized by third party apartment inspectors.
The city used Esri’s ArcGIS Urban and City Engine to visualize development scenarios in two locations to provide realistic renderings of proposed developments.
An app was created for licensed professionals to provide apartment inspection data that can be viewed in real-time by Community Development staff. Staff can identify trends and see real-time data, determining which areas need focus. Nightly summaries of the inspection results are sent to the inspectors, staff and apartment managers.
