Under construction since April, the project to replace the North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek is set to open tomorrow, Wednesday, July 24. It is the first leg of a major construction project in the area.

The new bridge structure is wider and better equipped for increasing traffic levels in the area. It is also safer for pedestrians with wider sidewalks and ADA compliant ramps at crosswalks, according to Georgia Department of Transportation.

GDOT said in a press release that a 90-day roadway closure was implemented between Buford Highway and West Druid Hills Drive to expedite the demolition and reconstruction of the old bridge, originally built in 1962.

“Overall, traffic moved around the work zone without major disruptions and the anticipated open to traffic date meets the 90-day contract period,” the release stated.
“Georgia DOT appreciates the patience of motorists and coordination with community partners who allowed the department to build the new bridge structure quickly and safely.”

Last week, the bridge barrier was poured and the deck grinding and grooving had been scheduled. Asphalt paving of the bridge has begun, according to the GDOT update.

In late April, GDOT closed the bridge and established a detour route. The entire project includes realigning Executive Park Drive and an entrance to the new Children’s Healthcare hospital, constructing an additional bridge over I-85, building out a displaced left turn lane, and constructing a braided ramp from the I-85 northbound off-ramp to the access road.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones. Real-time information on traffic conditions can be found online  www.511ga.org, or on the Georgia 511 app. Project information is available at https://i85-sr42-interchange-0016054-gdot.hub.arcgis.com/.
