A 22-story student housing tower called Hub Cypress is planned for a small parking lot at the corner of Cypress and 7th Streets in Midtown.
The lot sits behind the historic Academy of Medicine building, next door to the Biltmore at Midtown apartments, and across the street from ecco restaurant.
Core Spaces, which recently completed the nearby Hub Atlanta student apartments, presented its plan to the Midtown Development Review Committee earlier this month.
Hub Cypress will have 265 units including 1,194 bedrooms with 161 parking spaces (including parking for the Academy of Medicine building) in a garage located above ground floor retail, including a coffee shop. The building cannot utilize below-ground space since the MARTA tunnel runs directly beneath the property.
Pedestrian and bike access will be along 7th Street with vehicle access and loading along Cypress Street.
The committee recommended moving the building’s spa and fitness center to an upper level to allow for more retail space on the ground floor.

Since the parking podium will be across a narrow alley from the Biltmore apartments, the committee recommended removing parking spaces on each floor to create a greater setback and allow for a tree-lined buffer.
Similarly, the committee recommended the west facade of the deck be detailed with elements matching the Academy of Medicine building.
Streetlights and trees consistent with the Midtown Streetscape Plan were also recommended along Cypress and 7th Streets.
Updated plans are expected to be reviewed by the committee at its September meeting before recommending approval to the city.
