This year’s SCAD AnimationFest will feature a keynote speech from Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Cartoon Network’s “Dexter’s Laboratory” and director of the first three “Hotel Transylvania” films. 

The SCAD AnimationFest is hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and will run in Atlanta from Sept. 26-28. The festival will be held at SCAD”s SCADshow theater, and Tartakovsky is expected to deliver a speech on Friday, Sept. 27. 

“SCAD students grew up on Genndy’s classics, and now, in true SCAD fashion, they’ll experience this 2D icon in 8K reality,” said SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace in a press release. 

SCADFILM will also present Tartakovsky with this year’s SCAD AnimationFest Award of Excellence. He will be given the award on Friday evening. 

The festival will also feature numerous screenings and panels through the weekend, including a panel with SCAD alumni who worked on Guillermo del Toro’s recent film “Pinocchio” and a preview screening of “Memoir of a Snail,” a stop motion movie from filmmaker Adam Elliot. Attendees will also have the opportunity to preview an episode of “Common Side Effects,” a new original series coming to Adult Swim in 2025.

According to the release, executives and creatives from Adult Swim, Bad Robot, DC Studios, DreamWorks Animation, Netflix and more are expected to be in attendance. 

“At SCAD, animation is our number one degree program and a large part of student success includes the exclusive opportunity to be mentored by the best in the industry at this signature event,”said Mollie Brock, director of SCADFILM, in the release. “Our students and alumni are creating incredible stories that pair passion with state-of-the-art technology, redefining what is possible in animation.”
