A new indoor farmers market opening next summer in Underwood Hills will include a wine bar from Hop City and Summerland Cafe from James Beard award-winning chef Anne Quatrano.

Called Upper West Market – taking a cue from the rebranding of a collection of neighborhoods in Northwest Atlanta now referred to as “Upper Westside” – developer Robles Partners promises a food-driven destination. According to the release, the market will sell seasonal produce and meats from local farms, include locally owned restaurants and food stalls, and host events and cooking classes all under one roof.

Upper West Market will occupy two buildings along Collier Road near the Silver Comet Connector Trail. Expect a central vendor area inside flanked by shared walk-in coolers and storage spaces for market tenants, indoor and outdoor seating, and individual restaurants like Quatrano’s cafe, the wine bar from Hop City, and a bistro serving grab-and-go food.

Atlanta-based ASD/SKY will handle the design for Upper West Market.

When asked to explain the difference between the concept behind Upper West Market and a food hall, Robles Partners managing partner Ben Hautt pointed to the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle and Borough Market in London as their inspiration. Both markets feature vendors selling local produce and goods as well as restaurants and food stalls.

But another example can be found in the heart of Atlanta: The Municipal Market, known locally as Sweet Auburn Curb Market. Like Pike Place and Borough, Sweet Auburn Curb Market includes restaurant stalls, produce vendors, butcher counters, fishmongers, and cooking classes.

Established in 1918 as an open-air market on Edgewood Avenue, the Sweet Auburn Curb Market served as a place for local farmers to sell their produce and livestock. The market helped revitalize the Sweet Auburn and Old Fourth Ward neighborhoods after the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917 devastated the area. The market moved into its present building seven years later, opening as The Municipal Market in 1924.
