Brookhaven City Council members passed several ordinances at their Jan. 14 meeting, including one to stop the transient sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits.
Peggy McCarthey, a volunteer board member for the Georgia Pet Coalition, spoke to council members about legislation and advocacy. Illegal sellers “prioritize profit over any welfare standards,” she said, and sell animals for dog fighting and to guard drug houses.
“This ordinance gives law enforcement and animal control an easy tool. There’s no need to check for licensing because sellers simply can’t be in these locations,” said McCarthey. “It does not impact legal breeders who can still sell from their homes or businesses, or transfer an animal at a law enforcement station.”
Nine other jurisdictions have passed the ordinance.
