Members of the Brookhaven City Council on Feb. 11 voted to hire artists Armando Chacon and Hey Elise for two highly visible projects centered around the new city hall, set to open in summer 2025.
Dozens of artists submitted proposals to the Brookhaven Art and Culture Commission in August 2024, which were narrowed down and presented to city council members. In an email survey, the art submissions by Chacon and Hey Elise were ranked the highest by council members.
Chacon’s initial proposal to be displayed in the City Centre atrium is a colorful large-scale painting done in oil or acrylic for up to $22,000. Hey Elise’s proposal for a mural on the wall at North Druid Hills Road MARTA is a Brookhaven-themed design for $118,000.
Next, the artists will work with Brookhaven Arts and Culture Commission to refine the colors and designs. Final plans will be revealed this spring.
Brookhaven City Council members also:
- Held a first read and public comment to amend one SPLOST II funding category from paving to parks;
- Approved a resolution to expand the Citywide Street Light District to Haven Brook and Harts Mill Road;
- Approved Karstin Bodell and A.D. McNaughten to the board of appeals, Lily Pabian to Explore Brookhaven, and Ivan Shammas to the Brookhaven Development Authority;
- Reappointed Matthew Osucha and Sherean Malekzadeh to the planning commission.
The next city council meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m.
