The City of Dunwoody is taking nominations for its annual Sustainability Hero Awards for 2024.
The award honors individuals and organizations for sustainable practices. The nomination period, according to an announcement by the city, runs through March 6.
The winners will be selected by Dunwoody’s Sustainability Committee and announced in April. Qualified individuals must be residents of the city, and companies and businesses must be licensed with the city in order to be considered, or have clear ties to sustainable initiatives in Dunwoody.
The council named Jason Metzger and Oak Avenue Landscaping as recipients of the 2023 Sustainability Hero Awards. Metzger was recognized for his support of recycling and alternate transportation efforts. He served as the Solarize Dunwoody liaison, and worked to strengthen the city’s Sustainability Plan as a member of the Dunwoody Sustainability Committee.
Oak Avenue Landscaping was selected as the business recipient of the Sustainability Hero Award for making Dunwoody more eco-friendly, according to the city’s website.
Oak Avenue Landscaping is an all-electric landscaping business that uses solar-charged batteries to run equipment. The resulting work is quieter and less intrusive than it would be with gas-powered equipment.
In addition, the company focuses on using native plants for landscaping installation projects. Other past winners included Michael Cowan and Blooms of Dunwoody in 2022 and Laura Johnson and the Dunwoody Community Garden and Orchard in 2021.
In other news, two new members were appointed to the committee at Feb. 10’s city council meeting – Kristen Monta and Anne Hicks.
