One hundred and thirty-seven alumni and students from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) have worked on 18 different films nominated at the 97th Academy Awards.
The SCAD alumni and students represented at this year’s Oscars put their efforts toward five Best Picture nominees, two Best Animated Film nominees, and all five films nominated for Best Visual Effects, according to a press release. The number is slightly down from last year’s Oscars, when 158 students and alumni were represented.
Notable alumni credits include Katerina Kojeva (B.F.A., production design, 2016), who was a costume concept artist for “Wicked,” which was nominated for Best Picture, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design; Alyssa Bracken (B.F.A., production design, 2012), assistant costume designer on “A Complete Unknown,” which is nominated for eight awards including Best Picture and Best Costume Design; and Wyatt Garfield (B.F.A., film and television, 2007), the cinematographer for “A Different Man,” nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
52 of the alumni credited for their work on Oscar-nominated films graduated from SCAD with a degree in visual effects. The films nominated for Best Visual Effects are “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “Better Man,” “Dune Part Two,” “Wicked,” and “Alien: Romulus.”
“No matter how the voting goes, a SCAD alumni will be on the winning team for Best Achievement in Visual Effects on March 2nd!” said SCAD Visual Effects Chair Gray Marshal in the release. “At SCAD, we prepare our students to lead the industry, and this year’s Oscars are a testament to that. The sheer number of our visual effects graduates who contributed to these nominated films, both animated and live-action, is a proud moment for our department and the university as a whole.”
Filmgoers and fans can see results of this year’s Academy Awards live on Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m. eastern on ABC or streaming on Hulu.
This article has been updated to reflect that 137 SCAD students and alumni worked on Oscar-nominated films this year.
