A pie in the face is just a waste of good food

March 14 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Tucker. Well, it’s 3.14, which seems like as good of an excuse as any to eat some pie.

🥧 Frankly, if I had control of the world, every day would have a different dessert connected to it, so that I could literally “carb” my way through the year.  So far, I have found a website that ties 54 desserts to a specific day. I think we can do better.

In this week’s newsletter, we have information about the postponement of this weekend’s chili cook-off, a recap of Tucker City Council’s March 10 meeting, where more happened before it than during it, unless rezoning proposals are your jam. And, a report on the Tucker Police Precinct virtual meeting, some activities that will get you moving, and finally, a Pi Day fun-run to celebrate you-know-what.

P.S. I’m convinced my love of dessert can be traced back to my relatives. My grandmother Betty, a retired college professor, ate a bowl of ice cream every morning, topped with a healthy scoop of Lucky Charms, while smoking her first cig and glancing over that morning’s obituary page to see who may or may not be available to chat that day. Goals.

🥣 Happy Pi Day. Eat a pie,
Cathy

Chili cook-off is off (for two weeks)

⛈️ Because of concerns about the weather (rainy with gusting winds), the 9th annual Tucker Chili Cook-Off, regularly scheduled for March 15, has now been moved to March 29. Not much else will change, including the 1-5 p.m. time slot.

A $10 entry ticket includes tastes of all the chili entries. Soft drinks, water, and adult beverages (courtesy of The Local 7 and Ford’s BBQ) will be available for purchase.

Pro-pickleballers surface at city council meeting

🏓 I guess it was only a matter of time until the people who want a pickleball complex in Tucker would come out en masse, and it happened at the March 10 city council meeting. Most public speakers followed a “we-want-it,” “you-approved-it,” and “you-need-to-build-it-now” script.

Mayor Frank Auman finally clamped down on the rowdy applause that followed after each speaker finished his or her remarks. Come on people, save it for the courts (said nobody living on Morgan Road).

📰 Just a reminder: This project is officially on hold, according to Auman. The council also discussed zoning, playground equipment, and upcoming projects (but not that one).  Here’s the story.

Dropping truth bombs in Tucker

👮🏿‍♀️ I attended the monthly Tucker Precinct DeKalb County Police virtual meeting on March 12, which was supposed to feature a beat officer giving us some insights into the day in the life of a cop.

Unfortunately, because of technical issues, that didn’t happen, so I broke through down the imaginary journalistic wall to ask some specific questions about crime on Main Street and a recent street fight involving teenagers near Village Burger. Maj. Matthew Harden put down some hard truths about parenting, crime prevention and why you shouldn’t believe everything you read.

🫢 More about the meeting here.

A delicious end to the newsletter

Here are some upcoming events to get you moving, and may or may not include pie.

🍃 The Friends of Johns Homestead and the City of Tucker are partnering on March 23 to host an MLK Day of Service workday, which had to be postponed because of the poor January weather.

The group will work on removing invasive plants throughout the park, as part of FOJHP’s commitment to provide 1,500 volunteer hours as part of the match for the $2.52 million grant the group received from the State of Georgia DNR.

Come dressed in long sleeves/pants. Gloves can be provided, but feel free to bring your own.

😋 This is the kind of fitness I can endorse. The Tucker Recreation Center on Friday, March 14 at 6 p.m. will have its annual Pi Day Pie-K. This 3.14K run/walk is open to the whole family—including your four-legged friends. Celebrate Pi Day with a walk or run, then enjoy a well-earned slice of pie at the finish line.

🏃🏽‍♂️You can register for the free event here.

🍷 Also this is the kind of non-fitness I can endorse, an afternoon stroll in nature at Tucker Nature Preserve, which involves drinking wine, meeting beekeepers hearing about their craft, and buying local honey. It’s Saturday, April 12 from 3-5 p.m. at 4408 Lawrenceville Hwy.  Bring your ID so you don’t get boxed out.
