The Brookhaven Heights neighborhood is going full “Great British Bake Off” from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, holding a friendly baking contest in Langford Park that’s open to the public.

Eight bakers are signed up – but more are welcome, said Brookhaven Heights Community Association board member Michaela Fletcher, the brainchild behind the Brookhaven Heights Neighborhood Bake Off. She’s planning to bake her grandmother’s lemon pound cake.

Bakers have been instructed to bring “anything that can’t melt” in the hot sun. Tasting and judging will begin around 4:30 p.m.

One registered contestant, Matt Morton, is known in the community for his baked goods. Fletcher said he was instrumental in planning the event.

The bake off will have a DJ, soft drinks, games, and prizes for the top baker. Dogs are welcome.

The bake off is one of two public events held by the association each year. A chili cook off has been held for three years running in October, and draws about 100 neighbors. The neighborhood is comprised of about 300 homes south of the new City Centre, in District 3.

Although former British Bake Off host Mary Berry is not scheduled to attend, hopefully the Brookhaven bakers won’t have to deal with any “soggy bottoms.”
