Tara Overzat, a licensed professional counselor, announced her candidacy for the Sandy Springs City Council District 3 seat on a rain-soaked Saturday at the Abernathy Greenway North.

Overzat is expected to face incumbent Melissa Mular in the Nov. 4 municipal election.

“I’m running for Sandy Springs City Council District 3 to champion sustainability, promote responsible growth, and ensure our city remains a vibrant, welcoming place for all generations to live, work, and play,” Overzat told Rough Draft Atlanta.

Her platform focuses on protecting green spaces, improving walkability and transit access, supporting thoughtful development, and expanding programs for youth, families, and seniors. Overzat said she wants to bring transparent, compassionate leadership to the city council and to ensure Sandy Springs remains a thriving, inclusive place.

Overzat said she has served as a liaison for the nonpartisan Citizens’ Climate Lobby, which advocates for bipartisan legislative solutions to climate change. She’s also a member of the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia.

Overzat, who has about 15 years of experience, runs a virtual private practice, Getting Overzat LLC. She also teaches as an adjunct professor in the Mercer University graduate counseling program. Over her career, she said she’s taught and trained hundreds of graduate students and therapists.

Overzat earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida, and earned a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling and a doctorate in counselor education and supervision from Mercer University.

Overzat has lived in Sandy Springs with her husband, Sean, and their cats, Moxie and Midnight OverCat, since 2019.
