Blue Heron Nature Preserve in Buckhead will get a new headquarters building and is planning improvements to a portion of the park.

According to a press release, the nature preserve at 4055 Roswell Road has been in its current building for the past 16 years. “The current building has served us and our conservation and education partners well,” the release said.  “Unfortunately, the building needs significant repairs, was never built for its current use, and public access is limited.”

The City of Atlanta has begun the planning process for the new nature center building and more details are expected to be announced later this year.

Blue Heron is also exploring improvements to the Land O Lakes location, on the south side of the property. “This is an opportunity to continue offering conservation, education, and public programming while the new nature center is being built, and to serve as a long-term field location for the Preserve in the future,” according to the press release.

To help guide this vision, Blue Heron is asking for community input through a short public survey. Visitors can weigh in on what kinds of improvements would serve them best, such as trail connections to surrounding neighborhoods, indoor and outdoor learning spaces, restrooms, gardens, native meadows, and more.

“This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of Blue Heron in a way that better serves our city, our environment, and future generations,” Kevin McCauley, Executive Director of Blue Heron Nature Preserve, said in the release. “We’re excited about what lies ahead.”
