The Brookhaven City Council meeting was held at the new City Centre building for the first time on Tuesday, Aug. 26, as the city pushed to complete multi-use paths and sidewalk projects.

In a special meeting of the Urban Redevelopment Agency (URA), held between work session and the regular council meeting, members approved additional funding for the North Druid Hills multi-use project. The 10-foot-wide path will run along North Druid Hills Road, connecting south of Sylvan Circle to the Oglethorpe/Brookhaven MARTA station at Apple Valley Road. ADA accessible ramps, crosswalks, lighting and streetscaping will be installed.

City council members voted in favor of acquisition of land by eminent domain to complete several projects.

The city will pay for land acquisition to complete Peachtree Creek Greenway Phase II including $2.4 million for 2700 Buford Hwy. and 2716 Buford Hwy. The city did not state how much they paid for the acquisition of 2821 Buford Hwy., 1195 West Druid Hills Dr., and 2021 North Druid Hills Rd.

“We have had increased communications with council for several of these properties since the announcement of this resolution, and it is quite possible that resolutions are reached outside of the eminent domain and condemnation process. Those discussions continue. In fact, we received a counter offer earlier today,” said Assistant City Attorney Joe Siegelman.

Finally, Susie and Vic Parker were recognized for their donation of a Steve Penley painting of Murphey Candler Park, the crown jewel of the city’s green spaces. The painting will be displayed at Brookhaven City Centre.
