1. Stuckey’s CEO Lamar returns to Oglethorpe to inspire students
🚜 Stuckey’s CEO R.G. Lamar returned to his alma mater, Oglethorpe University, on Oct. 7 to talk about lessons he learned at the liberal arts college in Brookhaven, his experience in international negotiations, and family pecan farming.
Recruited by an Oglethorpe golf coach, Lamar hails from Hawkinsville, GA, a town south of Warner Robbins. After earning a business degree from Oglethorpe in 2005, he spent two years working for the U.S. Department of State in Afghanistan. He left the government position in search of community.
Lamar decided to move back to Hawkinsville to apprentice at his family farm, which had a fair amount of debt at the time. Through the process of figuring out how to improve operationally, create a strategy, and stabilize the market for pecan products, Lamar created Front Porch Pecans – the company’s first effort at a consumer-packaged product.

2. Perspectives in Architecture: Historic building endures changing times
🏤 As the Great Depression devastated Atlanta, construction of the Federal Post Office Annex boosted the local economy and civic pride. Supporters applauded the employment of 300-400 construction workers in 1932 and 1933 to build the $8 million postal facility, an equivalent of approximately $193 million today.
Atlanta architect Anthony Ten Eyck Brown (1878-1940) designed the Federal Post Office Annex in a stripped-down, modern Classical style in contrast to the ornate classicism of his design for the Federal County Courthouse. The Federal Post Office Annex became the first federal building named for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1988.
This year, the federal government placed and later removed the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Building from the list of buildings that could be sold or leased by the private sector. This designation could have placed the building’s future at risk. At a time when buildings are often built to last for only 20 to 30 years, design firm Lord Aeck Sargent President Joe Greco notes the durability and craftsmanship of this landmark, saying, “They don’t build buildings like this anymore.”
