The Atlanta Department of Transportation will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Oct. 31, to kick off construction on the South Boulevard Safe Street project.

The event will take place at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Boulevard SE and Hamilton Avenue SE.

Improvements will be made along a 2.2-mile stretch of Boulevard from Woodward Avenue SE to McDonough Boulevard SE, including resurfacing, protective bike lanes, traffic calming measures like curb extensions, enhanced crosswalks, and signal upgrades.

The project received pushback from residents along the route, especially concerning the elimination of some on-street parking to accommodate the bike lane.

The project is part of ATLDOT’s Vision Zero goal, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

Construction is set to last for about a year, according to ATLDOT.
