Key Points:
• The Sandy Springs City Council approved adding 19 city street sections to its annual resurfacing project.
• The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a $1.27 million Local Road Assistant grant to the city.

An unexpected $1.27 million grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation will enable Sandy Springs to resurface sections of an additional 19 city streets.

The Sandy Springs City Council approved a change order during its Nov. 18 meeting to a contract with East Coast Grading to add the resurfacing using Local Road Assistance (LRA) funds distributed by GDOT. Public Works Director Marty Martin said the LRA funds came after the council awarded a $6.5 million contract to the company in May.

Using the city’s street conditions report, East Coast Grading submitted a proposal for an additional $1.32 million in resurfacing work, slightly more than the LRA distribution. Martin said the city has funds to cover the additional cost to resurface 3.84 miles of city streets. The total cost of the resurfacing project will be $7.78 million.

Martin said East Coast Grading’s unit rates for the additional 19 street sections were consistent with the rates set in the original contract awarded in May. Adding these street sections extends the contract period by 60 days, setting a new project completion date of June 20, 2026.

Martin said the department chose to make a change order to the existing contract instead of bidding out the additional funds because of the deadline set by GDOT to complete the LRA work by the end of June 2026. Putting it out to bid might not allow completion before the deadline.
