A 77-year-old man was struck and killed by a FedEx truck driver over the weekend near the entrance of Tucker Target shopping center.

Around 11:13 a.m. Saturday, the victim, Berhane Tedla, was hit by a FedEx truck while walking on a private driveway at Target on Northlake Parkway near Crescent Centre Boulevard, a DeKalb County Police Department spokesperson told Rough Draft Atlanta.

“Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was crossing a private driveway at Target and was struck by a FedEx truck attempting to make a turn out of that driveway onto Northlake,” said Blaine Clark, DeKalb County Police public information officer. “The incident is still under investigation.”

FedEx officials nor police officials have released the name of the driver.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends who are mourning the loss of their loved one as a result of this tragic accident,” said Heather Wilson, FedEx spokeswoman. “Safety is our highest priority, and we are cooperating fully with the local police in their investigation.”

A day prior to this fatal incident, another pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in DeKalb County near the intersection of East Parkwood Road and West Ponce de Leon Avenue in the Decatur area.

Police reported that the victim sustained “moderate injuries” in that crash. As of Oct. 15, there have been 284 pedestrian accidents in DeKalb County in 2025, 20 of those were fatal, which is down from 30 pedestrian fatalities for the same time period in 2024, Clark told Rough Draft Atlanta.

Tucker officials are moving forward with the road and sidewalk improvements that seek to address walkability challenges with both the Tucker Connects Transportation and Trails Master Plan and Revive L29 Lawrenceville Highway Access Management and Beautification Study approved for initial funding in a Dec. 8 council meeting.

District 1 councilman Roger Orlando said the tragedy that occurred Saturday highlights the need for pedestrian safety measures.

“As Tucker continues and the council continues to push and provide for pedestrian safety and connectivity, hopefully these types of tragic events can be avoided in the future,” he said.
