Piastra Italian Restaurant in Marietta closed earlier this month but will soon reopen as a market and cafe on Jan. 19.
Called Asher & Rose Modern Grocers, the temporary closure allows the mother-son team of Chef Greg Lipman and Betty Bahl to flip the space from a traditional restaurant into a market and cafe. The new concept addresses a community need for a local market, while maintaining some of the dishes and drinks that made Piastra popular in Marietta, Lipman and Bahl said of the transformation.
Located on Marietta Square, the market at Asher & Rose will sell fresh produce, North Georgia cheeses and other dairy products, local pantry goods, and custom cuts of meat and fish. The market will also sell bread, baked items, prepared meals, and wine.
The cafe at Asher & Rose will continue to serve wines by the glass, cocktails, and beer, as well as a few pizzas, pastas, and food specials people have enjoyed over the years at Piastra.

“While we are excited to introduce new enhancements and offerings in our modern grocery, we want to assure our Piastra customers that their beloved Italian favorites and mainstays, like our pizzas, pastas, and fresh food specials, will remain unchanged,” Bahl said in a prepared statement.
“This temporary closure allows us to make some exciting updates that will allow us to bring an entirely new experience rooted in the legacy hospitality that the Marietta Square is historically known for,” Lipman added.
Bahl and Lipman plan to host a grand opening in February, which will see the launch of catering services, special events, more cafe seating, and an expanded product selection at Asher & Rose.
