After nearly two years of reports of its looming closure, Macy’s at Northlake Mall has come to an end, according to a memo sent to employees on Jan. 8.

Macy’s at Northlake Mall will soon close along with 12 stores across the country as a part of the company’s ongoing “Bold New Chapter” strategy, Tony Spring, Macy’s CEO, said in a memo to employees. It was not clear when the Tucker-area store would officially close.

“In executing our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make careful decisions about where and how we invest, including closing underproductive stores and streamlining operations. These decisions are not made lightly,” Spring said in the statement.

In the memo, Spring said the company had informed all affected employees . In some cases, employees will be transferred to other locations, while others will receive outplacement resources and severance. The store closings will occur in states, including North Carolina, Texas, California, Washington, and New Jersey.

Macy’s long tenure

Macy’s was first introduced at Northlake Mall as Davison’s when the mall opened in 1971. In 1985, the store’s name changed to Macy’s, and briefly rebranded as Rich’s Macy’s between 2003 and 2005.

Macy’s announced in February 2024, the “Bold New Chapter” effort, as an approach to strengthening sales, focusing on digital sales, expanding small-format stores, and closing about 150 underproducing stores. Northlake Mall’s location had been on the chopping block since that announcement. Two locations in Duluth have since closed as a part of the strategy. Eighteen other furniture and traditional Macy’s locations in Georgia will remain open.

The company’s luxury stores, Bloomingdales and Bluemercury, with locations at Lenox Square and Buckhead Market Place, continue to thrive, according to Spring’s report. Bloomingdale’s delivered a 9 percent uptick in sales during the third quarter, which was its strongest in 13 quarters. Bluemercury delivered its 19th consecutive quarter of sales growth, Spring said.

“These targeted changes allow us to focus where it will have the greatest impact – reimagining our best stores, enhancing customer service, expanding our luxury business, and advancing our supply chain capabilities,” Spring said. “ I am confident that, even when our work requires difficult decisions, we will continue to move Macy’s, Inc. forward, delivering for our customers and shareholders.”
