The DeKalb County Board of Education elected a new board chair and vice chair for 2026 at its Jan. 12 meeting.
Allyson Gevertz, who supports District 4, was named the new board chair. Awet Eyasu, representative for District 7, will now serve as vice chair. Previously, District 3’s Deirdre Pierce headed the board, and Gevertz was vice chair.

“I am honored by the board’s confidence in electing me as chair of the DeKalb County Board of Education. I’m so proud of the work of this board,” Gevertz said in a statement. “I look forward to working collaboratively with the superintendent, educators, and community to support student success and make thoughtful, transparent decisions in the best interest of our students.”
Gevertz is in her eighth year as a board member. The former school psychologist is a community activist who has spent many years focused on public education advocacy.

Eyasu is in his second year on the board. Previously, he served the City of Clarkston as as a council member and vice mayor for eight years.
