Making room for one another
Jan. 28 — Community is a practice. It’s built through repetition, intention, and care – often by people who decide to make space where none existed before.
This week’s Sketchbook stories sit squarely in that understanding. Both focus on artists who are creating conditions for others to create and shaping spaces where connection can take root. These aren’t gestures of scale or spectacle. They’re acts of commitment, sustained over time.
Near the Krog Street Tunnel, local non-profit Courage2Cre8 is turning a shared public corridor into a recurring site of encounter where artists and neighbors meet without pretense each month. Inside The Upton, CBrooks Art offers another model: long-held vision. After years of carrying the project forward, curator Courtney Brooks is bringing “Journey of a Black Girl” to Chosewood, as a gallery show that brings Black women artists together in celebration.
What connects these stories is the understanding that community doesn’t appear all at once. It’s built slowly, through consistency and a willingness to open a door again and again. In heavy times, that kind of work can feel small. It isn’t.
What does your practice look like?

⏱️ Conceived as a public art project before the pandemic, “Journey of a Black Girl” comes to life six years later as a fully realized exhibition at CBROOKS Gallery. Curated by Courtney Brooks, the show brings together more than 40 artists reflecting on joy and collective care.
