A huge fire at Dunwoody Village Apartments has engulfed at least one apartment building and displaced dozens of residents, who are now homeless during a major cold snap that has seen temperatures dipping into the teens.
According to residents, multiple rescue units, police, and fire trucks are on the scene of the complex, which is located on North Peachtree Road, across the street from First Baptist Church.
Resident Heidi Morton said she had heard sirens outside her apartment around 6 p.m. on Jan. 31 and saw an onslaught of fire engines, police cars, and ambulances converging on the scene.
The fully engulfed building is located across the street from the complex’s pool, near the apartment’s mail kiosks.
The blaze is located in a building that has about 10 units, which all have gas-operated fireplaces. Witnesses say that the structure appears to have suffered a total loss.
Residents say that they have been told by rescue personnel that one of the fire hydrants that serves the complex is not operational, thus making one of the hoses that has been hoisted onto a crane inoperable.
Residents are currently wandering around the property or being housed in the apartment’s pool house, which is serving as a relief station. Most say that they have lost all their possessions.
Representatives from Bridge Property Management, which manages Dunwoody Village Apartments, are on the scene assessing the damage.
About five years ago, a gas line explosion at the same complex injured two people and caused major damage to one of the buildings.
This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes known.
