Round and round

Feb. 13 — It’s Cathy and Stephanie with ourweekly newsletter. This week has us in a tizzy, what with street roundabout plans being introduced and surprising school closure proposals.

It’s also everyone’s favorite fake holiday tomorrow, Valentine’s Day. As usual, our Rough Draft mailboxes are full of places to go and things to do on the day that commemorates St. Valentine, a third-century Roman priest and martyr.

Here’s a fun fact: Beyond lovers, St. Valentine is recognized as a patron saint of people with epilepsy, plague victims, and beekeepers. I get the first two, but . . .

The news is next, but first, here are a few things going on in Tucker.

🪦 “Murder, Inc.,” an unscripted murder mystery dinner put on by Main Street Theatre, will hit the “stage” on Feb. 19, 22, 26, and March 1 at Fresca Tattoria. Here’s the rundown: “High-powered members of this company and a couple of others, along with family and longtime employees, are jockeying for position. Hammerdahl Senior, the CEO of the company, is finally going to come out of seclusion to preside over a board meeting and lay down the law!” The promo promises an evening of intrigue, comedy, and suspense for audience members, who will dine on a three-course meal. Buy tickets here.

📖 If you aren’t too busy getting last-minute gifts, stop by Tucker Recreation Center for its International Book Giving Day on Saturday, Feb. 14. Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., bring your previously loved books and exchange them for new titles to enjoy. You don’t have to register to attend. Here is more information

🧆 And don’t forget Tucker restaurant week is coming up Feb. 24 to March 1. Here’s Stephanie’s preview of the big week ICYMI.

Have a great weekend,
Cathy and Stephanie

‘You spin me right round baby, right round’

⨕ A major Tucker thoroughfare will soon feature the city’s first roundabouts after the city council approved a $2.5 million construction contract at its Feb. 9 meeting.

The council approved a contract for the construction of two roundabouts along Idlewood Road. One at the intersection of Idlewood and Fellowship Road would include raised sidewalks, a single lane roundabout, and four entryways. The second would be at the intersection at Sarr Parkway, with three entryways, Ishri Sankar, the city’s public works director, said.

The roundabouts will ease traffic congestion and improve safety at the two Idlewood Road intersections, which experience increased traffic due to school transportation and rush hour.

School closure list includes Brockett Elementary

💔 DeKalb County School District revealed a list of 27 schools that could be closed or repurposed based on a recommendation in the Student Assignment Project (SAP) as part of an effort to address the district’s ongoing declining enrollment.

The district is in the “scenario and community feedback” phase of the SAP. The goal of the project is to maximize resources, ensure long-term academic sustainability for students, families and DCSD staff. There are 26 elementary schools and one middle school that could potentially close over the course of six to eight years, Carla Parker, DSCD spokeswoman, said.

Among the schools under consideration for closure are Brookhaven’s Ashford Park Elementary, Vanderlyn and Kingsley elementary schools in Dunwoody, and Brockett Elementary in Tucker.

😤 You better believe that Tucker residents are not thrilled with the potential closure of their beloved school. Read more here.

Laughter (and music) is the best medicine

❤️‍🩹 R&B fans know Stokley Williams as a Grammy-nominated solo artist and lead singer of legendary band Mint Condition. However, folks come across the 58-year-old musician’s music, he intends not only to deliver melody but healing in every refrain.

“What I’m doing is about bringing people together, healing,” Stokley shared in an interview with Rough Draft Atlanta. “Your message can either be positive or negative, and my thing is bringing the positive to every show that elevates.”

On Valentine’s Day, Williams will bring that energy to “Love and Laughter with Stokley & Friends” at Tucker’s Londzell Performing Arts Theatre. The concert and comedy show, which starts at 7 p.m. on Feb. 14, will feature Stokley, singer Kari Epps, and comedians JJ Williamson and Kelly Kellz.
