Mar. 4 — Transgender people across Kansas received letters in the mail last week demanding the immediate surrender of their driver’s licenses following the passage of one of the harshest transgender bathroom bans in the nation. The American Civil Liberties Union immediately filed a lawsuit to block the ban. The bill also includes what critics have described as a “bathroom bounty hunter” provision, permitting anyone who encounters a transgender person in a restroom – including potentially in private businesses – to sue them for large sums of money. This draconian law is a test case for other conservative states and will likely wind up before the Supreme Court.
