The organization formerly known as the Georgia LGBTQ History Project has a new name: Out History Georgia.
Founded in Atlanta in 1999 as the Georgia LGBTQ Archive Project, the organization has worked to connect the public with historical collections documenting LGBTQ life in the state, according to director Tom Dibble Dempsey.
Dempsey said the new name reflects the organization’s focus on helping the public discover and access the history of LGBTQ people in Georgia by connecting researchers, students, educators, and community members with the archival institutions that preserve these records.
“Unlike a traditional archive, Out History Georgia serves as a public history guide, directing people to libraries, museums, universities, and historical collections where LGBTQ materials are preserved and made available for research,” Dempsey said. “Georgia’s LGBTQ history exists in many places across the state. Our goal is to help people find those collections, understand their significance, and make this history easier for everyone to explore.”
Programs and initiatives include:
• Guides to LGBTQ archival collections across Georgia
• Public history exhibits and pop-up displays
• Educational resources and presentations
• Community outreach highlighting historical institutions and collections
The name Out History Georgia reflects the organization’s goal of making LGBTQ history more visible and easier to explore, Dempsey said.
