New Norcross neighborhood proposed
March 13 — Hey there, it’s Hayden with your weekly Norcross newsletter.
In this issue, I have stories on Gwinnett County Chair Nicole Love Hendrickson’s State of the County address, the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, and a rezoning proposal for downtown Norcross.
🤔 But first, a few thoughts.
The Norcross City Council’s approval of the comprehensive plan updates earlier this month generated opposition from some elected officials and residents concerned with traffic congestion and density. The rezoning and proposed subdivision would increase the supply of owner-occupied housing in downtown Norcross. The city council will discuss the item next Monday and vote on April 6. Look for more on this rezoning story below.
I would love to hear your thoughts on how the proposed subdivision will impact downtown Norcross. Do you prefer high-density, multi-family rentals, or detached single-family homes? Email me at hayden@roughdraftatlanta.com.
🛝 Norcross is partnering with Live Healthy Gwinnett for the Day of Play series this spring, and the first free event at Lillian Webb Park is this evening from 5-6 p.m.
🔥 The Norcross Police Department is inviting the community to join officers for its first-ever Law Enforcement Torch Run on Saturday, March 28, raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics Georgia.
🍔 As a reminder, Explore Gwinnett, the county’s official tourism organization, kicks off Burger Week March 16-22, offering $12 specialty burgers at 21 local restaurants.
🚔 WSB-TV reports that the DeKalb County Police Department arrested five suspects in a prostitution sting earlier this week at a home just southeast of Norcross.
Have a great weekend,
Hayden

Gwinnett County chair pitches sustainable growth, redevelopment
🏗️ During her State of the County address, Gwinnett County Chair Nicole Love Hendrickson said strong roots make the area a predictable place to raise a family and foster smart growth.
Hendrickson’s biggest announcement is a redevelopment opportunity in unincorporated southwest Gwinnett County at the corner of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Interstate 85. The county-owned site, to become the Gwinnett Gateway, is a 106-acre property just outside Norcross.
“Gwinnett County has a history of proactively investing in sites with significant redevelopment potential and seeking partners to transform these underutilized spaces into vibrant places that foster economic growth and enhance quality of life,” Hendrickson said.

Norcross rezoning proposal cleared for downtown redevelopment
🏘️ The Norcross Planning and Zoning Board recommended approval of a rezoning for 290 and 300 Academy Street at its March 4 meeting, enabling redevelopment of a block near downtown Norcross into a new neighborhood.
The applicant, Robert Forro of 4.0 Construction, seeks a rezoning of the properties from single-family residential (R75) to planned residence district (PRD) to permit the by-right construction of 15 single-family detached homes.
A Norcross spokesperson said the developer has funds readily available for immediate use toward the planned construction and that the project conforms to the city’s comprehensive plan.
