Atlanta Film Festival celebrates the legacy of Georgia film with 50th anniversary lineup
🎥 The Atlanta Film Festival announced the lineup for its landmark 50th anniversary event.
The 50th Atlanta Film Festival and its corresponding Creative Conference will take place from April 23-May 3 at the Plaza and Tara Theatres, according to a press release. Screenings of select films will be available virtually from May 4-11.
To celebrate 50 years, the film festival will present a selection of legacy screenings of films that have helped shape Atlanta’s film landscape. These events will often include special guests like James Ponsoldt, who will appear alongside a screening of his 2013 film “The Spectacular Now.”
Ponsoldt, who is from Athens, was among the first cohort of Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Competition winners. Julie Dash will also appear alongside her 1991 film “Daughters of the Dust,” which was filmed near the Sea Islands of Georgia.

Tucker to host three community hikes at Henderson Park in April
🦋 As part of the recently approved partnership between the City of Tucker and Cooper Carry to create a community-driven master plan for Henderson Park, three community hikes are planned throughout April. The series of hikes are designed to get Tucker residents to Henderson Park so they can provide feedback on what’s working well and what needs improvement in the beloved outdoor space.
Henderson Park, which spans approximately 111 acres, includes amenities like Lake Erin, a waterfall, soccer fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic shelters, hiking trails, a dog park, a native plant and wildlife walk, and a community garden.
Hikes are scheduled for April 1, April 8, and April 18. At the end of the community feedback project, the firm will present up to two master plans of Henderson Park, which will include a phased project prioritization list and estimated costs for construction and maintenance.

Adaptive kayaking program in Sandy Springs offers adventure on the water for all
🚣 In partnership with nonprofit Catalyst Sports, Sandy Springs is offering adaptive kayaking at Morgan Falls Overlook Park, designed to provide individuals with physical disabilities the opportunity to experience adventure on the water.
The inclusive program ensures that each paddler has a supportive environment to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, with a focus on safety, accessibility, and individualized support.
“Our goal is to remove barriers and create opportunities for everyone to experience the freedom of being on the water,” Recreation and Parks Program Coordinator Jane Jarrett said. “Through our partnership with Catalyst Sports, we are able to provide expert instruction, adaptive equipment, and a welcoming community for paddlers of all abilities.”

‘First Impressions’: Stories of Atlanta by Lance Russell
VIA SAPORTAREPORT
✍️ It was not long after three railroad lines were connected to a central point in north Georgia that people began beating a path to Atlanta. Word had spread of the abundant opportunities and cheap land, and those seeking better lives were arriving to the young city every day.
There were, of course, those looking for work with the railroad companies, but there were also those in the service industries – merchants, carpenters, lawyers, realtors, waggoneers and the like.
And where there are people, there are usually children, and that was good enough for William White, who traveled to Atlanta from Utica, NY seeking to establish himself in the community as a teacher. Mr. White did not stay in the area very long, but he did leave a record that became invaluable to our understanding of Atlanta’s history.
