A man who was shot multiple times at the Brookhaven Kroger on April 13 has died.

The Brookhaven Police Department, in an April 20 release, said Tony E. Matthews, 48, of Atlanta, succumbed to injuries sustained in the shooting.

Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, has been charged with malice murder, in addition to previously filed charges in connection with this incident, which include the shooting death of two women in DeKalb County. According to police, the attacks seem to be random.

“The loss of Mr. Tony E. Matthews is a tragedy that deeply affects his family and our entire community,” said Police Chief Brandon Gurley. “The Brookhaven Police Department is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into this incident.

Brookhaven will continue to work closely with the DeKalb County Police Department and the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office to complete the multiple investigations, the release said.

According to BPD officials, police responded to a call at 1:59 a.m. on April 13, “in reference to a person shot.”

“Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds,” the statement said.

Officers provided first aid until the DeKalb County Fire Department and DeKalb AMR took over life-saving measures. The victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, and was listed in critical condition, the statement said.

It was the second shooting in less than a month at this location. BPD arrested Vesselin G. Tzvetkov, 79, on April 1 in connection with the shooting of a 75-year-old on March 22, according to a release from the department.

The department recently held a community meeting at the Peachtree Kroger to ensure residents that the department is monitoring the area closely.
