“The essence of Lynwood Park has always been its people — trendsetters, go-getters, families and leaders whose resilience and creativity built a lasting legacy,” Brookhaven Council Member Michael Diaz said in the release. “Lynwood Park Day is a chance to celebrate that spirit and the generations who continue to move the community forward.”

The annual celebration honors the history of Historic Lynwood Park, one of the oldest historically Black communities in DeKalb County. Founded in the early 1930s, the neighborhood provided African American families a place to own homes and build roots during an era when segregation restricted access to much of metro Atlanta. Over time, residents established churches, schools, and other institutions, forming a community rooted in faith, family, and hard work.

In 1968, a group of students known as the Lynwood Trailblazers made history by integrating the DeKalb County School System. The original school building now serves as a Brookhaven Parks and Recreation facility with basketball courts, a pool, and a splash pad. It continues to host reunions for the Trailblazers and former residents.

“When we celebrate Lynwood Park, we celebrate resilience, achievement, and legacy,” Mayor Pro Tem and Council Member John Funny said. “Its history deserves to be recognized, and its future deserves to be supported.”
